My dog has been acting funny about eating?

For a couple weeks now my dog, who is 8 months old, has been acting funny about eating. He will sometimes go up to the bowl, sniff at it and walk away. Sometimes he will eat part of it and leave the rest. He is acting completely normal, he’s really active and playful and has no vomiting or diahrrea at all. Has anyone experienced this with their dog? Could it be that he is tired of his food? I still have him on puppy chow because the vet says to keep him on it until 1 year old. Any advice would be appreciated!

My puppy acted funny about her food until I switched her to Canidae. She LOVES Canidae and it’s free of cancer causing preservatives. Check it out and see if it’s available in your area.

it may be that he’s not crazy about his food.

if he’s an only dog, this may be a factor too. only dogs tend to be more leisurely eaters because there’s no one to “compete” for food with.

Do you leave food out all the time? If you do it is time to stop, only feed twice a day at the same times everyday. Puppy chow is not a very good food (you were probably mislead). Go to your local pet store and see what they have. Evo, Innova, Before Grain, Wellness Core, Orijen, Artemis and Fromm are my favorites.

Hey Beth! My dog is 5 years old and still does that. When the weather is extremely cold or rainy, he won’t eat or drink so he doesn’t have to go to the bathroom. Once in a while I add a really small amount of soft food( Cesar’s) to his regular food. My advice is to exersice your pup- even a quick job around the block. Every time I take mine for a walk or run- he eats immediately. If that doesn’t work, call your vet.

    3 things:
    1) if you feed him, or give him some human food, even if it”s just once or twice…he will wait for more and cut down on his own food.
    2) You should feed him twice a day. Wait 20 minutes. If he doesnt eat,
take the bowl away and give it back the second feeding. They will not do it 3 days in a row….Food should not stay in the bowl ever. Always
put it away if he doesnt eat.
    3) Dogs, depending on the weather , season etc…will change their eating habits..so keep an eye on this pattern.
    Good Luck
